. . . what love is . . .

120814 11:30 what love is

For some, time is a pustule of boredom hanging from our face to be despised endlessly; a shame.

For others, too few, it is not enough, a trillion lifetimes, to love the universe trackless save for those who through love expressed as music, dance, poetry or any other form of creativity -- even if only writing suicide notes -- plumb the height, width, breadth and depth of love.

Blessing or curse, M once said "you can heal," an oft repeated theme of ours seldom spoken of but the pulse of our friendship. Only once since that utterance did I ask for clarification, she said simply, "you will." And i, once mere dust upon the floor of the dust bin, did she heal with tears unshed moistening my dust into a clay vessel which in time became a chalice spun upon her potter's wheel.

Do I love my maker?

Of course I do.

What is the meaning and consequence of love? How do we define what by needs must be mutual agreement except by negotiation. And thus far conjugal chaste visitation is best for us; we M&m.

Upper & lower case since I for one will always be her creation with, now, too little time for more. Then too by her leave no jealousy between us since we love all mankind equally seeking tolerance before union which of needs must come if life as we know it is to survive. Neither of us attend any particular worshiping body since each day is Sabbath days of rest in the Love Of God blessed.

And held within each infinity of days are all the rites of passage: birth, life, death, resurrection cycling back to birth renewed . . . no so much spoken or enacted but part of the endless cycle of prayer sung.

Each of us singly married to God who at times is our child at play in the sandbox of eternity; the teacher taught what it is that we will for all. All ground of being becomes holy eventually . . . alone or apart never alone for God is always with/within us all.

Coleman Barks, poet and chief translator of Rumi, once said of God, "too freighted with . . . " to speak -- a man unable to articulate the weight of none sense spoken about God. Who knows God through Rumi better than what?

What follows is an incomplete collection of wisdom defining love by others who speak with divinity. I sense now my near leaving of this mortal coil and welcome each moment as another chance to enable a better understand of The All, THE LOVE.

The Four Aspects of True Love

Love is one of the most confusing of feelings. What some people call “love” may be possessiveness, or simple desire, or some other lesser emotion.

According to Buddhism, there are four elements of true love. Read what this wise teacher has to say, and find out if what you feel is true love, here:

Here are the four aspects of true love.

1. Loving-kindness. Loving-kindness is not only the desire to make someone happy, to bring joy to a beloved person, it is the ability to bring joy and happiness to the person you love, because even if your intention is to love this person, your love might make him or her suffer. To be able to give happiness and joy, you must practice deep looking toward the person you love. Because if you do not understand this person, you cannot love properly.

2. Compassion. This is not only the desire to ease the pain of another person, but the ability to do so. You must practice deep looking in order to gain a good understanding of the nature of the suffering of this person, in order to be able to help him or her to change.

3. Joy If there is no joy in love, it is not true love. If you are suffering all the time, if you cry all the time, and if you make the person you love cry, this is not really love–it is even the opposite. If there is no joy in your love, you can be sure that it is not true love.

4. Freedom. In true love, you attain freedom. When you love, you bring freedom to the person you love. If the opposite is true, it is not true love. You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free, not only outside but also inside. “Dear one, do you have enough space in your heart and all around you?” This is an intelligent question for testing whether your love is something real. --Adapted from True Love, by Thich Nhat Hanh (Shambhala, 1997).

The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose. --Hada Bejar

The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves. --William Hazlitt
The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. --Carl Jung
“The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend. I have no wealth to bestow on him. If he knows that I am happy in loving him, he will want no other reward. Is not friendship divine in this”--Henry David Thoreau
The worst solitude is to be destitute of sincere friendship. --Francis Bacon
There's a difference between a philosophy and a bumper sticker. --Charles Schulz
To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides. --David Viscott
To love for the sake of being loved is human, but to love for the sake of loving is angelic.
--Alphonse de Lamartine

The love we give away is the only love we keep. --Elbert Hubbard
We ask for long life, but 'tis deep life, or noble moments that signify. Let the measure of time be spiritual, not mechanical.. --Ralph Waldo Emerson
We love because it's the only true adventure. --Nikki Giovanni
We love our enemy when we love his or her ultimate meaning,” professor Adams told us. We "may have to struggle against what the enemy stands for; we may not feel a personal affinity or passion for him. Yet we are commanded for this person’s sake and for our own and for the sake of the destiny of creation, to love that which should unite us."
--Chris Hedges
"We must be our own before we can be another's." --Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Without wearing any mask we are conscious of, we have a special face for each friend." --Oliver Wendell Holmes

What Love Is–A Buddhist Master’s Wisdom
--Adapted from Living Affinity, by Hsing Yun (Lantern Books, 2004).

Love certainly can be confusing: some kinds of love are “healthy,” others are “unhealthy;” some are “giving,” others are “possessive.” Love has its pluses and minuses.

Sometimes we could all use a little clarity around the whole issue of love. Find out what this wise Buddhist master has to say about it, and then pass it on to someone you love.

From the perspective of its minuses–

Love is like a piece of rope: it can be binding and restrictive.

Love is like a lock: it can shackle us and make us restless.

Love can be blinding: it can keep us in the dark without any awareness that we have compromised our principles and standards.

Love is like the honey on a sharp blade: it can entice us to lick the blade, even at the risk of cutting our tongues and risking our lives.

Love can be like a sea of suffering: its turbulent waves can trap us in its depths.

From the perspective of its pluses–

Love gives us the strength to make sacrifices, to give, to encourage, to connect and to be compassionate.

Love is like a road map: it gives our lives direction and we can see our destination with clear visibility.

Love is like a blanket: it provides us with warmth and security.

Love is like a box of chocolates: it is sweet and full of surprises.

When we love properly, we expand our love for a few to compassion for all. This love can help all beings to live with happiness and freedom, and it is anything but small and powerless–it is the reason for our existence! –A Buddhist Master’s Wisdom

"When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares."  --Henri Nouwen

"With you I should love to live, with you be ready to die." --Horace
Words of love, are works of love. --William R. Alger
Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.. --Mark Twain
You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection. --Buddha

Psychologists Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon in A General Theory of Love:
"An infant’s emotional scaffold provides for temperament and for innate abilities like reading facial expressions. Limbic contact with his parents hones that pluripotential structure into the template of emotional life — the neural core of emotional identity. Once this quintessence is firm, we say that a person exists, and we can know the individuated attributes of his emotional self. Ongoing experience gradually transforms his neural configuration, changing him from who he was into who he is, one synapse at a time. Emotional identity drifts over a lifetime — if fast and far enough, one might encounter a stranger’s heart where a friend’s or a lover’s once dwelt.”
